Format of Work Term Reports

Preliminary Pages:

Title Page

Please do not include your student ID number on your work term report.
      See the sample title page.

Table of Contents

Include a list of exhibits and appendices, if applicable.

Executive Summary

This is a one-page summary of your report. You may also summarize your key conclusions and
recommendations. It is easiest to write the executive summary last.

Body:
Most students use seven to ten pages, double-spaced, for the body of the report.

      Introduction

Explain your objectives for the report; you may introduce yourself, your job, and/or the theme or focus of
      your report.

      Main report

      If writing a descriptive report:

         • Explain the structure of your organization and its products, services or purpose.
         • List your responsibilities.
         • Show how you have contributed to the productivity of the organization.
         • Explain how you have developed skills.
         • State your learning objectives, list the steps you have taken to meet each one, and explain your progress
in achieving each objective. (We will not penalize you for failing to achieve an objective; we simply want
you to demonstrate self-awareness by explaining the reasons.)
         • Show what influence your work term has had on your career objectives.
         • Relate how your academic program has prepared you for this position.
         • Reveal which factors seemed to contribute most to your enjoyment of the job.

If reporting on a research project or preparing a special project report

         • Outline your methodology.
         • Describe your observations.
         • Present your conclusions and make recommendations.
         • Include a brief description of each component of the descriptive report.

      Conclusions

Summarize the main ideas of your report.

      Recommendations

Suggest a course of action or present ideas related to topics discussed in the report. You may, for example,
provide suggestions to the next student who holds the position.
