Business and Mathematics Co-op

The Academic Program:

Through an innovative partnership with the University of Waterloo, we offer a double degree program in Business Administration and Mathematics. All students in the program participate in co-op. They take business courses at Laurier and math courses at the University of Waterloo. In senior years, students may specialize in Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics and Optimization, Mathematical Finance, Operations Research, Pure Mathematics, or Statistics.

Most Laurier students will have their first and second work terms from January to April and their third from September to December.

Enrolment and Fees:

An information session explaining the co-op program will be held in the winter term of Year 1, and students are required to attend workshops during orientation week in Year 2.

Students who withdraw from a double degree program and register in an alternative honours program may not continue in co-op unless they are successful in the competitive co-op admission process as outlined in the applicable Co-operative Education section of the calendar.

In Year 2, the total co-op fee for this academic year assessed in fall term. In Year 3 and Year 4, a co-op fee is assessed each academic term according to the work study sequence selected by the student.

Student Testimonials
"The Business and Mathematics double degree program has given me an edge in attaining co-op jobs. During one term in an investment role at the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and two terms in corporate finance positions at Procter and Gamble, I have applied the leadership and teamwork skills I’ve gained from business courses, and the creative and analytical skills I’ve developed through mathematics courses."
Matthew Stein, Business Administration and Mathematics, Class of 2011

"The double degree math and business program challenges you not only to hone management and business skills, but also to gain superior analytical skills. The program opens doors in finance, accounting, operations, human resources, marketing, and many other fields."
Kim Colasanti, Class of 2008

“This has been a truly rewarding, challenging and enjoyable time for me. The intense theoretical curriculum at the Uof W complements the application-based knowledge acquired at Laurier to create a learning experience that is on par with the best institutions in the world. I attribute my success in extracurricular courses to the strong academic background I have attained in the program thus far.”
Derek Garkut, Class of 2007

“I believe the Mathematics and Business Administration Double Degree program prepares students to make an immediate impact in the business world. The two sides of the program complement each other perfectly, allowing students to more fully understand the mathematical concepts underlying real-world transactions, while also developing the soft skills necessary for career advancement. I have found that the program has built an excellent reputation among employers in all sectors, with students in the program often having little difficulty in obtaining employment.”
