Request for Exemption to Minimum GPA Form

If your overall GPA is very close to the cut-off and you wish us to consider your extenuating circumstances, please follow the instructions below. 

For Business and Economics: In 2010, the minimum first-year overall GPA is 8.0 for students in Business and Economics. Students need an overall GPA of 7.8 to 7.99 to be considered for an exemption. (We will not consider any applicant with a GPA lower than 7.8)

For Arts and Science: Students need at least 6.30 to 6.49 overall and 7.0 in their major OR 6.5 overall and 6.8 to 6.99 in their major to be considered for an exemption.

  • Print and complete this form, indicating which of the four extenuating circumstances had an impact on your grades in your first year at university. 
  • Write a letter explaining how your extenuating circumstances affected your grades in your first year at university.
  • Obtain any applicable supporting documents.
  • Bring the form, letter, and supporting documents to the Department of Co-operative Education at 192 King Street North in Waterloo, or send your request by mail to: Karen McCargar, Associate Director of Co-operative Education, Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario, N2L 3C5.

(Note: The form on this page is only for students seeking an exemption from the minimum GPA required to obtain an admission interview. There is a separate form for students who achieved at least the minimum GPA required to be eligible for an admission interview, and who would like us to consider their extenuating circumstances when making admission decisions.)

 Extenuating Circumstances

  1. A learning disability which was not accommodated during your first year.
    Provide documentation from Accessible Learning (or another university, if applicable.)
  2.  An ongoing chronic, debilitating, and serious health problem.
     Provide medical documentation that you received ongoing medical treatment in your first year at university, missed considerable time from classes, and that the health problem had an impact on your ability to submit assignments and write exams. Provide verification from faculty members and/or documentation showing approval of petitions).
  3.  A death in your immediate family (parent/legal guardian or sibling) during your first year.
(We will not consider deaths of friends or other relatives, including grandparents, unless they were your legal guardians.)
    Provide documentation.
  4. A serious and prolonged illness that occurred during your first year at university.
    Provide documentation that you received ongoing medical treatment, missed considerable time from classes, and that your ability to submit assignments and write exams was impacted (if at Laurier, through verification by faculty and approval of petitions). Common illnesses such as mononucleosis, strep throat, and influenza will not be considered unless documentation is provided as specified in #2 and illness of at least one month is confirmed.
