Appeal Process and Interview Feedback - Business & Economics Students

Business and Econonomics Co-op at Laurier is popular with students and the admission process is competitive. Because enrolment is limited, some strong candidates will not be offered admission. We do not have a waiting list.

We receive applications from 500 to 600 Business and Economics students each year.

Admission Process

Admission is based on the following process:

  • Students who meet the GPA cut-off are interviewed by two co-op co-ordinators.
  • Co-ordinators involved in the interview process meet as a group to determine which candidates will be offered admission.
  • Selection of students to co-op is based on the evaluation criteria stipulated in the introductory statement and at co-op information sessions. The department strives to treat all candidates in a fair and consistent manner.

Appeals Process

Step 1

* If you have not been offered admission and wish to appeal the decision, you must first attend a group meeting. In 2011, the meetings were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 and 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2011 in CC-201, 2nd Floor, 192 King St.

Step 2

* At this meeting you will be provided with a document; complete and return to our office by noon on Friday, October 14.

Step 3

* When you submit the form, you will be given an appointment for a feedback meeting with your interviewers. Feedback meetings were scheduled on October 17 and 18 in 2011. During the 10-minute meeting, the co-ordinators will review the document you have completed. They will identify the categories in which you were not as strong as most students we admitted and the responses you provided which were weaker than those by students we admitted.

Step 4

*If you wish to pursue an appeal, you will be required to complete a written application consisting of the following documents:

a) the form you submitted before your feedback meeting,
b) notes on additional information you obtained during your feedback meeting; use this form.
c) a written explanation and form outlining your reasons for appealing the decision as outlined here.
d) supporting documents which provide evidence as noted below

We are not able to consider appeals which are based on:

  • Information you did not provide or develop fully in the interview

-or -

  • Criticism of the current admission process.

-or-

We are able to consider appeals only if you provide:

  • Evidence that the interviewers did not assess the information you provided in the interview, according to the advertised criteria (first-year marks, work experience, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and performance in the interview) to make their admission decision.

or -

  • New evidence which was not available at the time of the selection process through no fault of your own; if, for example, you successfully petitioned your marks.

The written appeal application had to be submitted to the Co-op Office by noon on October 21 in 2011, addressed to Karen McCargar, Associate Director of Co-operative Education. Karen and Jan Basso, Director of Co-operative Education and Career Development reviewed written appeals and provided decisions in writing by 4 p.m. on Friday, November 4 in 2011. Appeal decisions are final.
