Laurier Co-op Student of the Year

We’re pleased to announce that Brenda Heatley has been selected as the Bell Co-op Student of the Year for 2005.

Brenda was nominated for this award by her co-op employer, Honda Canada of Scarborough, after an outstanding eight-month work term. At Honda, she tackled a challenging role which was created in response to an unusually busy recruiting season. She not only took on a full recruiting workload, but made other significant contributions to the human resources team.  Her supervisor, Mark D’Aliesio, says, “Brenda has surpassed all our collective expectations of what a co-op student in Human Resources could offer.”

Brenda was responsible for placing ten new staff members in positions which required very specific skill sets. Mark asserts, “This is a major success story for HR and for Brenda personally, as she was literally dropped into a recruiting frenzy at a time when deadlines and workloads would not have allowed us to meet our goals and deadlines without her assistance.” Brenda also reviewed and streamlined the recruiting process, re-designed the orientation program and created a “New Hire” guide for managers.

At Laurier, Brenda contributes to the campus community as a copy editor for The Cord Weekly and by conducting practice interviews with co-op students. She has also consistently achieved strong academic success.

Brenda was recently awarded a $500 cheque by Bell Canada representatives on campus. She was also Laurier’s nomination for both the CAFCE and EWO Student of the Year awards.
