Peer Advisors are a very important part of the success of the Career Centre.

Being a Peer Advisor provides you with an excellent opportunity to increase your knowledge of job search and career development strategies and materials.

By becoming a Peer Advisor, you make a two-term commitment to volunteer 3 hours a week in the Career Centre.

During your first year as a Peer Advisor, you will learn about the many resources in the Career Centre and you will perform resume critiques for non-graduating students, as well as complete at least one special project per term.

Past special projects have included:

  • designing promotional videos to assist in recruiting new volunteers
  • interviewing alumni and authoring career profiles for the website
  • contributing to an ongoing career centre blog
  • authoring articles for special publications
  • co-ordinating career education information in residences

Outreach to other students is a very important part of being an SCL. Therefore, familiarizing students with the many resources offered by the Career Centre is a key aspect of your job.

Being a Peer Advisor is a great experience; you will work individually and as a part of a team, building skills in communication, organization and promotion. You will also have a chance to improve your presentation and leadership abilities through working both in and out of the Centre. The SCL program is a part of the co-curricular record.

After you have a year of solid in-centre experience, you will have the opportunity to be given additional responsibility. For example, senior Peer Advisors may deliver specialty workshops.

Recruiting for Peer Advisors begins each year in February.  New Peer Advisors begin preparation for their duties in advance by completing training packages sent to them over the summer months and then they participate in approximately three days of on-site training during Orientation Week in September each year.

Application deadline is Thursday, April 8 at 4 p.m.
