The Ontario Human Rights Commission defines disability as covering "a broad range and degree of conditions, some visible and others not. A disability may have been present from birth, caused by an accident, or developed over time. It includes physical, mental, and learning disabilities, mental disorders, hearing or vision disabilities, epilepsy, drug and alcohol dependencies, environmental sensitivities, as well as other conditions."
It is important to note that not all individuals who may be perceived as having a disability consider themselves to be someone with a disability. All disabilities are intrinsic in nature and may differ from one individual to another. The person is a person first, with unique talents, skills and personality.
Keep in mind that many disabilities are not visible, such as mental health issues and learning disabilities among others. Despite not being visible, the impact of the issues should not be underestimated.
